What ATAR do these HSC marks get?

Estimated ATAR with 2025 scaling if you got the same HSC mark in every course. Real results mix higher and lower marks, so treat these as a guide and run your own marks in the calculator.

HSC marks you need for an ATAR of 80, 90, 95 or 99

The lowest average HSC mark (the same in every course) that reached each ATAR with 2025 scaling. Science courses scale higher, so they need lower marks for the same ATAR.

How the HSC ATAR is calculated in NSW

  1. You get an HSC mark in each course, out of 100 (out of 50 for 1-unit courses). This is the mark on your NESA results.
  2. UAC scales every mark. Scaling keeps your place within each course but adjusts for how strong that course’s students were. See what a mark scales to in every course.
  3. Your aggregate adds up 10 units: your best 2 units of English plus your best 8 other units, out of 500.
  4. The aggregate becomes a rank. UAC compares it with everyone your age to give your ATAR, from 0 to 99.95.

HSC ATAR calculator questions

Is the HSC ATAR calculated differently from other states?

The ATAR is a national rank, but each state builds it from its own results and scaling. In NSW, UAC calculates it from HSC marks. VCE (Victoria) and QCE (Queensland) use their own systems, so use this calculator only for the NSW HSC.

How many units do I need for an ATAR in NSW?

At least 10 units of ATAR courses, including at least 2 units of English, at least three courses of 2 units or more, and at least four subjects. Your ATAR counts your best 2 units of English plus your best 8 other units.

I do Maths Extension 2. How do I enter Extension 1?

Extension 2 students have Extension 1 reported out of 100, and they don’t sit the Mathematics Advanced exam. Add Extension 2 and the calculator switches Extension 1 to a mark out of 100 and leaves Advanced out.

Should I enter my raw exam marks or my HSC marks?

HSC marks, if you can estimate them. Raw exam marks are usually aligned upwards before they become HSC marks, so entering raw marks tends to underestimate your ATAR.

When do I get my real ATAR?

Wednesday 16 December 2026: HSC results from 6am (NESA) and ATARs from 9am (UAC).
